Lee Perry 'meets' Tom Zé! World music masters together on Digitaldubs' new single!
Digitaldubs has just released a new single, promoting an unprecedented and unusual meeting: Tom Zé, a Bahian tropicalista who loves São Paulo, and Lee Scratch Perry, the Jamaican master of dub, the psychedelic branch of reggae.
(Lee "Scratch" Perry)
The meeting happens on Digitaldubs' new single, "Estudando o dub", already available on the main digital platforms. The person who imagined the meeting and worked to make it happen was Marcus MPC, DJ and producer of Digitaldubs. The recording of "Estudando o Dub" was born from "Toc", one of Tom Zé's experimental compositions, originally recorded on one of the most important and cult albums of the artist's discography, "Estudando o Samba", released in 1976, 41 years ago.

Marcus's idea was to bring "Toc" into the dub universe, but with the vocals of Tom Zé and Lee Scratch Perry, both coincidentally 81 years old. In 2015, taking advantage of a show by Perry in the city of São Paulo (SP) and opened by Digitaldubs, the producer convinced the Jamaican artist to record a vocal for the track.
(Tom Zé)
A year later, in 2016, it was Tom Zé's turn to lend his voice to the recording produced by Marcus. The result is "Estudando o dub", whose lyrics revolve around the phrase "open the door / abra a porta", a kind of mantra for perceiving the opportunities that arise. For 2018, an LP edition is planned with other dub versions of the recording.
